War in Ukraine: Kiev warns of danger from sea mines that could wash ashore

The coastal and shipping communities around the main port of UkraineOdessa, received a warning today from military officials about the increased risk from marine mines which are drifting towards the shore and are in danger of washed ashore.

Ukraine and Russia they blame each other that they are using mines off the Ukrainian coast, which is preventing her safe navigation in the area. Soviet-made mines are anchored, but in storm conditions some of them could be swept away by the current. “There is a high probability that sea mines will become detached from their anchors and wash ashore or drift towards the shore“, wrote on the Telegram application the representative of the military administration of Odessa Serhiy Brachuk.

“Since March of last year the Russia still uses autonomous guidance, inactive sea mines, a smart weapon against Ukraine,” he said in a separate video.

Russia disqualified the ports of Odessa– the main loading points for Ukrainian grain exports – after the invasion of Ukraine last February. The blockade was imposed on three Ukrainian Black Sea ports at the end of July under an agreement between Moscow and Kiev brokered by the United Nations and Turkey.

And from then until the end of January, Ukrainea exported over 17 million tons of grain and olive seeds through the safe transit corridor, as announced last week by the Ukrainian grain traders’ union UGA.

The union pointed out that in January 2023 the exports of agricultural products “were significantly reduced due to deliberate delays in ship inspections by Russia”, which Moscow denies.
