French President Emmanuel Macron pledged today to “work with his European partners to impose new sanctions” against Russia after it annexed four regions of Ukraine, the Elysee Palace announced.
During a phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, Macron “reiterated his strong condemnation of Russia’s illegal annexation” of four Ukrainian regions, according to the statement.
“He reiterated France’s determination to help Ukraine fully regain its sovereignty and territorial integrity and to work with its European partners to impose new sanctions” against Russia, the French presidency said.
The EU reacted on Wednesday to Russia’s annexation of four occupied regions of Ukraine by mainly proposing a cap on Russian oil prices and new restrictions on trade with Moscow.
At the same time, Paris condemned the detention of the general manager of the Russian-controlled Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, Ihor Murasov, who was arrested on Friday by a Russian patrol.
Macron and Zelensky “underlined the urgent need to allow the Ukrainian personnel who ensure the operation and safety of the facilities” of the nuclear power plant to change very soon.
