War in Ukraine – Margaritis Schonas: We will soon exceed three million displaced

Its vice president Commission, Margaritis Schoinasargued that the sanctions imposed by the West on Russia how they “bite” its economy. At the same time, he referred to the refugee wave caused by war in Ukraine.

“The situation is very difficult. “We have already exceeded 1 million refugees entering the EU and if the situation is not stabilized soon, we will soon exceed 3 million displaced people,” he said in an interview with SKAI television. He added that this number is the highest recorded in Europe since the end of World War II.

Mr. Schoinas also stressed the role of local communities on the border with Ukraine in terms of receiving refugees and the assistance they provide.

In addition, he stressed that he could not assess the development of the situation in Ukraine, but stressed that the European Union must remain united and this includes all 27 member states. He stressed that apart from Europe, the whole western world is united and Russia cannot ignore this. He added that the EU would stand by Ukrainian citizens.

Regarding the possibility of imposing new sanctions by the European Union on Russia, he argued that any decision will be thoroughly considered and should be taken at the right time.
