War in Ukraine: More than 300,000 refugees – New caravans a week

More than 300,000 refugees have left Ukrainein order to be saved from Russian troopswhile estimates indicate that their number will increase dramatically.

EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ilva Johansson, speaking at an extraordinary meeting of the EU Home Affairs Council in Brussels, noted that almost half a million people have fled their homeswhile they find refuge mainly in Poland and Hungary.

He also said that will be supported by the European Commission and the relevant European agencies to the EU Member States accepting refugees. “These countries are already doing a lot,” he said, “but we have to prepare for a much larger number of refugees who will arrive there in the coming days,” he said.

In fact, Johansson thought so is the right time to activate the “temporary protection” regimefor Ukrainian refugees, to have adequate protection, but also the possibility of moving to the EU. “This is something that will be discussed today and I will listen carefully to the various Member States, especially those directly concerned,” she said in her statement.
