War in Ukraine: Moscow tightens security measures in border region with Finland

Russian authorities announced today that they have stepped up security measures in the northwestern Murmansk region Russia, on the border with Finlandfollowing Helsinki’s decision to leave only one border crossing open with Russia.

“It was decided to implement in the Murmansk region the status of high alert and a number of additional measures aimed at guaranteeing the safety of our residents,” regional governor Andrei Tsibis noted in a post on Telegram.

The Russian authorities made this announcement after the decision taken yesterday, Wednesday, by Finland to keep open only one border crossing with Russia, that of Raya-Josepi, on the border with the Russian region of Murmansk, in the Arctic.

THE Finland it had already closed four of the eight border crossings in its southeastern section with Russia on Saturday to prevent the arrival of irregular migrants. “This means that the number of foreign citizens who want to pass to his country NATO through our territory will clearly increase”, underlined Tsibis.

According to him, about 400 foreign citizens had gathered yesterday at the Sala border crossing, in the northern part of the border between the two countries, and only 50 of them were allowed to pass by the Finnish border guards.

Finland, which joined the NATO in April in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, accused Russia of allowing irregular migrants to cross their shared border.

Finland, whose border with Russia stretches 1,340 kilometers, says it has seen an influx since late August visa-free immigrants coming from countries in the Middle East and Africa, mainly Iraq, Somalia and Yemen.

On Saturday, Helsinki closed four border crossings with Russia in its southeastern territory until February 18, 2024, leaving open four located further north.

The European Commission supported the Helsinki decision, denouncing the “shameful exploitation” of migrants by Moscow. Moscow rejected the accusations on Monday.
