War in Ukraine: Problems with access to facebook on major media websites in Russia

The facebook and multiple media and social media sites were partially inaccessible to Russia on Friday (4/3), reports a telegram from the French Agency.

AFP journalists in Moscow did not have access to Facebook, as well as the websites of the media Meduza, Deutsche Welle, RFE-RL and the BBC Russian service. As for the Meduza website, local media reported that it was due to a decision by the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office. Later in the day, a draft law is expected to be debated in the State Duma that provides for 15 years in prison for any publication or reproduction of “fake news” about the Russian military.

In addition, there were problems with Twitter, while applications such as Google Play and the App Store were “blocked”. Meanwhile, Google announced that it is restricting its targeted ads both on its platform and on other media such as Youtube.

The monitoring NGO GlobalCheck also stated that the sites were partially down.

A few days ago, Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook, will restrict access to the Russian state media RT and Sputnik throughout the European Union, as stated by the company in charge of international relations Nick Clegg.

According to him, the company had received requests from several governments and the EU to take further measures in relation to the Russian state media on its platforms. The ban on the two media outlets was announced by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in the context of European Union sanctions imposed on Russia. At the same time, many social media platforms have limited the visibility of Russian media.
