Several hundred Hungarians protested today in central Budapest to disapprove of Russian invasion of Ukrainebecause of which tens of thousands of refugees have crossed the border in search of a way out to western Europe.
The demonstration outside the offices of 1 (IIB), which moved its headquarters from Moscow to Budapest in 2019, was organized by the leader of the Hungarian opposition Peter Marki-Zei, who has a strongly pro-European agenda.
The opposition has described the IIB (in which Russia has a 42.9% stake) as a “spy bank” representing Vladimir Putin’s influence in Budapest. Hungary is the second largest shareholder with a share of 17.2%.
Following the Russian attack on Ukraine, the Czech Republic urged EU countries that are members of the IIB and IBEC (International Bank for Economic Co-operation) to leave these banks, where the Russian state is the largest shareholder.
Earlier in the day, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto expressed solidarity with neighboring Ukraine, where there is a large Hungarian community, and stressed that Budapest supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Hungary is one of the eight EU countries supporting the initiative to start Ukraine’s accession negotiations.
