War in Ukraine: Putin’s foursome with Belarusian leader Lukashenko today

Meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko will have today the president of Russia Vladimir Putin to discuss the situation in Ukraine and Western sanctions, broadcast news agencies in Russia and Belarus.

Russia sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine on February 24 from Russian and Belarusian territory to carry out what Moscow calls a “special military operation” to demilitarize and “de-Nazify” its neighbor.

Ukraine and Western governments have rejected the allegations, calling them a false pretext for an invasion that has killed thousands and displaced millions, and has now shifted its focus from Kiev to eastern Ukraine, where a major offensive is expected.

Mr Lukashenko has insisted that Belarus be involved in negotiations to resolve the conflict. conflict in Ukrainealso saying that Belarus has been unjustly described as an “accomplice in the attack”.

The EU, the US and others have included Belarus in the sweeping sanctions imposed on Russia, according to Reuters and the Athenian News Agency.

Mr Lukashenko arrived in the Amur region of the Russian Far East early today to meet with Putin at the Russian Vostocny Cosmodrome, the Belarusian news agency Belta reported.

April 12 marks the Day of Cosmonautics in Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union, on the anniversary of the first manned flight in space in 1961 by Russian Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
