War in Ukraine: Radioactive material untouched after Kharkov laboratory bombing

It is intact radioactive material in scientific laboratory in Kharkov after another bombing attributed to the Russian military and which caused damage to the building, according to Rafael Mariano Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The IAEA Director General, part of the UN system, explained in a press release published yesterday that the facility, which had already been bombed once after the outbreak of war in Ukraine on February 24, was hit again on Saturday.

The Ukrainian authorities informed the organization that “the building, its thermal insulation and the experimental room were damaged, but the neutron source, which contains radioactive material (…) was not hit”, according to the announcement.

The facility, the stock of radioactive material in which it is small, was used before the war for “research and development and production of radioisotopes for medical and industrial applications”, it is further explained.

The previous bombing, earlier in March, damaged the building and temporarily cut off power to the facility.
