War in Ukraine: Residents of Lviv save statues – See photos

Ten days after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, cultural heritage experts have expressed concern about the possible loss of artistic and historical monuments across the country.

On Monday, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said that about 25 paintings by the famous folk artist Maria Primachenko were destroyed in a museum in Ivankiv after a Russian attack.

Lviv has so far escaped the massive airstrikes observed in Kyiv and other major cities in Ukraine. People from all over the country have taken refuge in the city in search of safe haven, and many foreign embassies have also relocated there.

Residents of the Ukrainian cultural capital are helping efforts to preserve the historic monuments, according to local officials, as they wrap many stone statues in protective sheets.

Photographs taken in the city’s central Market Square show men climbing stairs to wrap sculptures of the god Poseidon and the goddess Amphitrite in a plastic shield. Along with the nearby statues of the ancient gods Adonis and Artemis, the limestone figures were made more than 200 years ago, with accompanying fountains in every corner of the square.
