Some residents of the besieged Mariupol trying to leave the city on foot as official evacuation efforts have largely failed due to ongoing Russian bombingclaimed the governor of the region.
About 400,000 people have been trapped in this port city for the past two weeks, without electricity, heating or water. Russia denies bombing residential areas or targeting civilians.
Speaking on public television, the Donetsk governor Pavlo Kirilenko says about 35,000 people have managed to leave the city in recent days. Many left on foot or in private cars.
“The exit from the besieged Mariupol starts with the residents leaving either on foot or by their own means of transport,” Kirilenko said, adding that some cars do not have enough fuel to reach the nearest villages.
The governor said the nearly incessant bombing was preventing authorities from opening humanitarian corridors to supply food to residents and evacuate women, children and those in need.
Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for failing to open humanitarian corridors.
The city council warned last Sunday that Mariupol was running out of food and water supplies, noting that it was unable to provide the necessary medical assistance to the victims of the bombings. Ukrainian authorities estimate that more than 2,500 residents have been killed in Mariupol since the start of the war on February 24.
