War in Ukraine: Russia is building fortifications in Crimea

In the announcement that it is carrying out fortification works on its annexed peninsula Crimea took place on Friday (18/11) Russia following the withdrawal of its troops from the neighboring Ukrainian region of Kherson following a counterattack by Kiev.

Fortification works are carried out under our control on the territory of Crimeasaid Sergei Aksyonov, the governor appointed by Moscow after the annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula in 2014.

As he pointed out these projects are being carried out “to guarantee the safety of the people of Crimea.”

However, he emphasized that Crimea’s security depends “primarily on measures to be implemented on the territory of the Kherson region”which borders the peninsula in southern Ukraine.

The announcement came as Russian forces last week made a humiliating withdrawal from the region after failing to counter a counterattack by Ukrainian troops.

The redeployment of Russian troops, who left the regional capital of the same name, allowed Kiev’s forces to move their guns closer to Crimea, which has been repeatedly targeted in recent months.

In October, the Crimean bridge, which connects the peninsula with Russian territory, was partially destroyed from an attack attributed to Ukraine by Moscow, which referred to a trapped truck.

Other attacks, attributed to Ukrainian forces, also took place in Crimea, mainly against the Russian fleet in Sevastopol and Russian military infrastructure on the peninsula.

After its annexation in 2014, Moscow considers Crimea to be part of its territory, which is not recognized by the international community. Kyiv wants to recover the peninsula.
