THE Russia ordered hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ballistic missiles from Iran, a diplomatic img at the United Nations told the German news agency on Tuesday.
“We know that Iran intends to increase deliveries to Russia”, to supply it with “large quantities” of such weapons systemsthe img said, adding that Moscow has turned to Tehran to address the acute ammunition shortage it is facing.
“I don’t think they’ve been sent yet,” the img added.
Russia has reportedly already used hundreds of Iranian-made Shahed-136 UAVs.
Moscow denies that it uses so-called “kamikaze” UAVs. The Iran however, it confirmed in November that it supplied remote-controlled drones to Russia.
Reacting, EU member countries imposed new sanctions on Iran, which already had a range of punitive measures, as noted by the Athens News Agency.
Pursuant to a UN Security Council resolution adopted following the 2015 agreement on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program, Iran is prohibited from entering into such arms sales deals. The US, Britain, France and Germany in October called for a probe by the international body into attacks using Iranian-made weapons systems on Ukraine.
