War in Ukraine: Russia simulates nuclear attacks in Kaliningrad

THE Russia announced that its forces were engaged in simulating nuclear attacks in the western enclave of Kaliningrad, located between Poland and Lithuania along the Baltic coast. The exercise involved simulated “electronic launches” of Iskander nuclear-capable mobile ballistic missile systemssaid in a statement the Russian Ministry of Defense.

As the British note Guardianciting the French Defense Ministry and the announcement of the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Russian forces were trained with single and multiple blows at targets that mimic missile launchers, airports, protected infrastructure, military equipment and command positions of a virtual force.

After the “electronic” launches, the military personnel maneuvered to change position in order to avoid “possible retaliation”, the Ministry of Defense added.

More than 100 soldiers are said to have taken part in the exercises.

The Guardian recalls that Russia put its nuclear forces on alert shortly after invasion of Ukraine on February 24 and Russian President Vladimir Putin hinted at the development of tactical nuclear weapons, warning of “lightning” retaliation if the West intervenes immediately in the Ukraine conflict.
