War in Ukraine: “Russia to end actions against Zaporizhia nuclear power plant”

To terminate all her actions against him nuclear power plant of Zaporizhia is requested from Russia by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), while the war in Ukraine to be continued.

The Council calls on the Russian Federation to abandon its unfounded claims of ownership of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant; to immediately withdraw its military forces and other personnel from the plant and to end all actions against and within the nuclear plant, as well as against any other nuclear installation in Ukraine,” the International Atomic Energy Agency said in its text.

As the Athens News Agency points out, this is the third draft decision and was submitted by Canada to the rest of the countries ahead of the meeting of the board of governors this week at the headquarters of the Organization in Vienna.

The wording of the draft resolution is similar to the wording of two previous resolutions adopted by the board of governors in May and September that denounced Russian actions in Ukraine.

The first decision concerned the Russian occupation of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant facilities. The day after this decision was issued, Russia seized the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe.

The previous decisions were adopted with large majorities, with only Russia and China to vote against them.

The meeting of the IAEA’s board of governors begins on Wednesday (16/11).

The Organization is constantly calling for the protection of the zone around the Zaporizhia station with the aim of limiting the risk of a catastrophic accident.

The bombings have caused damage to buildings and damaged the station’s power lines which is vital for cooling the nuclear fuel and preventing any meltdown of the reactor. Russia and Ukraine blame each other for the bombings.
