“Russian forces plan to shut down active power plants in Zaporizhia nuclear power plant and to disconnect them from the Ukrainian electricity grid” Energoatom, Ukraine’s state-owned nuclear power company, announced on Friday (18/8).
In a related announcement, Energoatom pointed out that it believes that Russia, which has placed under its control this nuclear plant located in southern Ukraine while the ongoing waris preparing to conduct a “large-scale provocation” there.
Moscow had also yesterday, Thursday, accused Kyiv of preparing “provocations” at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
“There is information that the Russian occupation forces plan to shut down the power plants and disconnect them from the supply lines of the Ukrainian electricity system in the near future,” Energoatom said in its statement.
“THE Russian army is now looking for fuel suppliers for the diesel generators, which are expected to be commissioned after the power plants are shut down because the nuclear fuel cooling systems will not be externally powered,” he adds.
THE nuclear power plant Zaporizhia, Europe’s largest, was seized by Russian forces in March but is still staffed by Ukrainian technicians, although only two of its six reactors are operating at full capacity.
Shutting down the plant will put new pressure on Ukraine’s energy supply, particularly in its southern part. Ukraine is already bracing for one of its toughest winters since independence and possible power shortages.
