THE Russia will respond accordingly to the expulsion of two of its diplomats from Bulgariabroadcast late Wednesday night (2/3) the Reuters agency, citing the reaction of the Russian embassy in Sofia, published by TASS.
Bulgaria announced earlier in the day, amid tensions between the European Union and Moscow, deported two Russian diplomats for espionage and gave them 48 hours to leave the countryannounced the Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodora Gencowska.
“Two Russian diplomats were declared undesirable after receiving a letter from the attorney general,” Gedovska told reporters.
The Foreign Ministry explained that it had “received evidence of espionage activities” on their behalf, spokesman Mitko Dimitrov told reporters.
According to the prosecution, one of the diplomats has received secret information since 2016 from a Bulgarian official of the Ministry of Defense, who was indicted today.
The judges did not provide further details about the second Russian citizen.
Bulgaria, member of the European Union (EU) and NATO, traditionally maintains close economic relations with Russiabut since October 2019, several espionage cases have sparked tensions.
In the latest announcement, a total of 10 Russian diplomats and a technical assistant at the embassy have been deported during this period.
The latest deportation dates from the end of April 2021, in connection with a search for six Russians suspected of being involved in explosions that took place between 2011 and 2020 in ammunition depots.
The aim was to “stop the delivery” of ammunition to Ukraine and Georgia, the prosecutor’s office had explained at the time.
Also, six Bulgarians, including army intelligence officers, were charged in November 2021 with suspected espionage on behalf of Russia.
Bulgaria’s state railways provide free transportation for people arriving from Ukraine
From Wednesday (2/3), the Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) provide free train journeys in Bulgaria to the citizens of UkraineBDZ announced in a press release.
To obtain a free train ticket, those arriving from Ukraine will have to show the ID they used to cross the border, either to the ticket office staff at the train station or to the cashier on board the train.
Bulgaria’s state-owned railways serve more than 685 railway stations and train stops, with more than 570 trains passing through them daily.
