His concern about the possibility of a “challenge” from Ukraine against him Zaporizhia nuclear power plant controlled by Russia expressed the Kremlin on Thursday (1/9) in view of the visit of a mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Russia and Ukraine accuse each other today of trying to sabotage IAEA mission at nuclear plant located in southern Ukraine, with the area currently being bombed and the international team delayed in reaching the station.
“We are concerned about the possibility of a provocation from the Ukrainian side, given that the barbaric and provocative shelling has not stopped“, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
He, as reported by the Athens News Agency, pointed out that Moscow is ready to cooperate with the IAEA and wants its mission to reach the nuclear power plant.
An IAEA spokesman said the mission was waiting at a Ukrainian checkpoint after fresh shelling, but remained determined to reach the nuclear plant today.
Speaking at an event in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said: “We are doing everything we can to guarantee that this station is safe, that it operates safely. And so that the mission there can proceed with all its plans.”
The Zaporizhia station, located right next to the city of Enerhodar, was seized by Moscow forces in March, but is still connected to the Ukrainian electricity grid and operated by employees of the Ukrainian state nuclear company Energoatom.
The site of the nuclear plant has come under repeated shelling in the past month, for which Kyiv and Moscow have blamed each other.
