War in Ukraine: Save The Dogs volunteers help the border

“People are the priority, but their animals are also there. And obviously we encounter resistance and difficulties in understanding that there is someone who also takes care of them »explains Sara Turetta, President of Save the Dogs and Other Animals in one of the update videos from the Romanian border with Ukraine. Yet there are many people who flee from the bombs by choosing not to leave their friends behind with their tails. Dogs in tow and cats in your arms: one of the problems faced by refugees leaving their destroyed homes is that of transport. For this reason, in the load of aid organized by the non-profit organization, he arrived at the south-eastern border of Romania with Ukraine, together with food, bowls, covers And sleepers there are also i pet carriers. A gesture that can, however, make the difference for those who want to continue the journey together with their four-legged friend.

The welcome point at the border

We are a Isacceaain Romania, one of the reception points set up on the Ukrainian border where boats arrive with refugees passing by the Black Sea and crossing the Danube every three hours. Here, the non-profit organization managed to set up one fixed location alongside other humanitarian organizations, in agreement with civil protection and local authorities. So far they have been helped 80 animals on the river border and 40 at Bucharest airport, where many refugees are routed to reach their final destinations. The volunteers who take turns, under blizzards and freezing temperatures, provide food, first assistance and forms in 4 languages for people who need to temporarily leave their animals. In addition, the staff is also trained to assist the owners of undocumented animals in the countries of the European Union. Several nations have authorized the entry of dogs and cats to accompany refugees, but there are some rules to follow.

The testimony in the field

«After several unsuccessful attempts, yesterday (9 March) we managed to have a first load delivered with 1.5 tons of food to two refuges of Odessa which welcome about 70 dogs and a dozen cats each. And today a second one ton load is leaving. The shelter volunteers will also bring their help to strays and share it with other shelters who know they are exhausted, some with only a week of autonomy. The greatest difficulty is precisely that of getting aid across the border, ”says Sara Turetta, who has been mobilized since the first days of the war. Together with her there are the operators of the association who volunteer in the nearby Romanian refuge of Cernavoda.

«In our center – continues Sara – we are organizing ourselves to be able to accommodate animals that may be evacuated from shelters in southern Ukraine or from other areas, setting up a dedicated area at our headquarters to accommodate up to 50 animals. Furthermore, we are present in theBucharest Otopeni Airport where we provide carriers for dogs and cats to allow those who travel with animals to be able to continue the journey ». Unfortunately, the situation in and around Odessa is increasingly critical and the city’s kennels will soon have to be evacuated.
