Russia reportedly occupied its first major city in Ukraine after a week of fighting, with Kherson – a regional capital of 300,000 inhabitants on the Black Sea – now under the control of Putin’s forces. Fact that was also confirmed by Ukrainian officials.
THE Igor Kolikayev, the mayor of the city, said in a briefing around 1:00 a.m. that “armed visitors” broke into a city council meeting and imposed new rules, including a strict curfew, and urged citizens to follow them. However, it was unclear whether Ukrainian forces had withdrawn completely, with the UK Foreign Office saying on Thursday that the situation was “unclear”.
If Kherson is under full Russian control, then the Russian invaders open the way for Odessa, the main port of Ukraine and its main naval base. Landing craft were spotted forming off the west coast of Crimea on Thursday morning, with US officials warning that a major offshore attack could occur later in the day.
The dramatic appeal of the mayor
Kherson Mayor Igor Kolikayev said Russian troops had deployed in the city streets and had stormed the city council earlier.
Kolikayev urged Russian troops not to shoot at civilians and called on civilians not to gather outdoors or take to the streets at night.
“We have no military forces in the city, only civilians – people who want to live,” the mayor of the Ukrainian city said in a statement.
A family of five was killed while trying to leave Hersonissos
The tragic human stories of civilians have no end after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Guardian, citing Ukrainian media, reported that a family of five was killed while trying to escape from Kherson as Russian troops occupied the city.
According to the same source, the family was trying to escape in two cars when they were attacked near Nova Kakovka on the outskirts of Hersonissos. Oleg Fedko lost his wife, Irina, his parents, his young daughter and his son.
The policeman’s brother said he was talking on the phone with his mother when she started shouting that there were children in the car. Then he heard gunshots. The attack allegedly took place last Thursday.
