Emergency hostels for Ukrainian refugees in Poland

The Voluntary Arcitects’ Network (VAN), a non-profit organization led by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, has set up emergency shelters for Ukrainian refugees in Poland. The PPS system, consisting of cardboard tubes and fabric curtains, is simple and easy to install; the VAN has previously been used as a disaster shelter for the homeless and as COVID-19 vaccination booths.

Before installing the PPS, the team assembled a prototype at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology and adjusted the dimensions of each unit to 2.3 meters by 2 meters.

On the 11th of the month, 319 hostels were housed inside a former supermarket in the town of Chelm, near the Polish-Ukrainian border. The installation was undertaken by university students led by Weronika Abramczyk. The refugees settled the next day. On March 12, 60 PPS units were installed at Wroclaw Central Station, again by university students, under the supervision of architect Agata Jasiolek.

The project to help Ukrainian refugees is being implemented by VAN and Shigeru Ban Architects in collaboration with a team led by Polish architect Hubert Trammer and Jerzy Latka of Wroclaw University.
