The dispute over control of nuclear plants in Ukraine and the gesture by Russian President Vladimir Putin to put Russian nuclear forces on alert have ignited a signal of concern in the international community.
The tense atmosphere in the region brought back memories of the Cold War period, when the two biggest nuclear powers on the planet, the United States and Russia, maintained a balanced peace in the belief that the enemy would not be the first to press the button. Now, the concern, on the one hand, falls on the safety of Ukrainian nuclear plants and, on the other hand, on the Russian nuclear arsenal, which accounts for more than half of the warheads on the planet.
In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira provides an overview of concerns that the war in Ukraine will affect nuclear facilities in the region. To clarify doubts about the security and risks of the nuclear framework of the conflict, the physicist Edilson Crema, a professor at USP, and the researcher Nathana Garcez, a specialist in international relations, participate in this episode.
