War in Ukraine: Strong explosion in Melitopol, five injured – “The power corresponded to 1.5-2 kg of TNT”

Five people were injured today by a powerful explosion that occurred in Melitopol, in the southeast Ukraine, the pro-Russian occupation authorities announced. “A car exploded in Melitopolis near the building of the ZaMedia media company,” they said in a statement posted on Telegram.

“Five people were slightly injured” in the explosion, which shattered glass in doors and windows on several floors of the building, according to the same img.

One of the injured was hospitalized, the statement added.

Russian public broadcaster Rossia 24 broadcast images of the building that appeared to show its interior walls partially burnt, glass windows and doors broken and staircases littered with rubble.

The building housed a pro-Russian television and radio network, which “continue their activities,” authorities said.

According to Russian journalist Alexander Malkevich, who oversees the operation of the ZaMedia television network, a car rigged with explosives exploded as workers were heading to their offices in the morning.

“The power (of the explosives) corresponded to 1.5-2 kg of TNT”added Malkevich, whose statements were cited by Russian news agencies, according to AFP and Agence France-Presse.

Melitopol is located in the Zaporizhia region, which was annexed by Russia in September along with three other Ukrainian regions – those of Donetsk, Luhansk and Kherson.
