War in Ukraine: The first trial of a Russian soldier for rape begins

Preliminary hearing in the first trial of a Russian soldier accused of rape Ukrainian during of war which is still going on.

Mikhail Romanov, 32, is expected to stand trial in absentia accused of killing a civilian in the Kiev region on March 9 and then repeatedly raping his wifeaccording to court documents.

She killed her husband along with another soldier and raped her

Romanov, as broadcast by the Athenian News Agency, is accused of raped a 33-year-old Ukrainian woman after she and another Russian soldier killed her husband by firing on him in the village of Bodanivka, northeast of Kiev. The two soldiers left and then returned two more times to rape her again. The second soldier has not been identified.

A prosecutor working on sexual violence cases in Ukraine told Reuters that up to 50 such crimes were being investigated, but added that the number of sexual violence crimes committed by Russian soldiers since February 24 may be higher.

Officials, activists and doctors have pointed out that many survivors of sex crimes are afraid or avoid reporting them to the police and the prosecutor’s office for fear of retaliation from the Russians and stigma from the local community.
