War in Ukraine: Turkey closes Bosphorus Strait for warships, implements Montreux Treaty

In a statement, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu said that Turkey was closing the straits to the Black Sea for all warships.

Tsavousoglu said that Turkey is implementing the Montreux Treaty, while there are currently an estimated 46 Russian ships in the Black Sea.

The Treaty of Montreux of 1936, which regulates the status of navigation in the Straits, stipulates that non-Black Sea countries must inform 15 days earlier for the passage of their ships.

The Turkish Foreign Minister said that “we have implemented what Montreux says and we will do it from now on. To date, there has been no crossing or request for crossing the Straits. Until now, the Russians have been asking if we would apply Montreux if necessary. We told them that we would strictly follow the agreement.

If Turkey is not a party to the war, it has the power not to allow the passage of ships of the countries that are parties to the war. If the warship returns to its base in the Black Sea, the passage is not blocked. We apply the provisions of Montreux. “We have warned all countries, coastal and non-coastal, about the issue of non-passage of ships through the Straits”.
