War in Ukraine: Turkey seeks help from Russia to expel its citizens from Mariupol

THE Turkey called on Russia to help evacuate its citizens trapped in besieged Mariupol, Ukraineannounced today the country’s Foreign Minister Mevlüt Tsavousogluwithout confirming whether the city mosque was hit by Russian bombing.

“We called yesterday (to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov) and asked for his help in evacuating our citizens.”he said.

The Ukrainian authorities complained yesterday that The Mariupol mosque, where about 80 civilians, including dozens of Turks, had taken refuge, was targeted by Russian forces.which have surrounded the city.

This is the first official reaction of the Turkish government after this announcement.

Tsavousoglou stated that “The imam of the mosque did not confirm the bombing” of the building. A member of the city’s Turkish community also denied yesterday that the mosque had been hit by the Russian army.

“He said rockets and rockets hit the area”said the Turkish Foreign Minister, acknowledging that “contact has been lost” with the community due to the “collapse of infrastructure”.

“We shared this information with RussiaHe added.

“We sent a bus to the area, but it could not enter the city”he added.

This is the first time that the Turkish government has confirmed the presence of its citizens in this mosque, without specifying their number.

“We support Ukraine’s territorial integrity, but we must work with both sides for humanitarian purposes.”noted Tsavousoglou.
