Russian troops hand over control of Chernobyl nuclear power plant back to Ukrainians and left the heavily infected area on Thursday, after the soldiers are said to have been poisoned by radioactivity.
The Ukrainian state nuclear company Energoatom has stated that it is withdrawing from Chernobyl took place after the soldiers received “significant doses” of radioactivity from digging trenches in the forest in the exclusion zone around the closed plant, although there has been no independent confirmation of this.
The withdrawal comes amid growing suspicions that the Kremlin is using the de-escalation debate in Ukraine as cover, while reorganizing, replenishing its forces and redeploying them for an intensified attack in the east of the country.
