War in Ukraine: UN says 6,731 civilians killed or injured

THE Michelle BacheletHis High Commissioner UN for Human Rights, said her office had collected data on civilian deaths and abductions as a result of Russian invasion of Ukraine from 24 February.

“Serious human rights violations are being recorded and increasing daily,” the Chilean politician said. He said 6,731 civilian deaths or injuries had been reported since the start of the war in Ukraine. However, he added that “the real number is much higher”.

From the end of February, he added, and for about five weeks, Russian forces in the area around Kyiv targeted mostly civilians who were considered suspects. They were arrested, beaten and executed in summary proceedings, and in some cases transferred to Belarus and Russia.

Regarding the kidnappings, Bachelet said that the evidence proves that illegal detentions and possible “disappearances” of people were made by force. Those who “disappeared” include local officials, journalists, activists, retired soldiers and other civilians. These groups of people were targeted by the Russian forces and their collaborators in the occupied territories of Kharkov, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson.

“As of May 4, my office has registered 180 such cases. “Five of the victims were found dead,” he said. Bachelet added that her staff also has evidence of rape of women by members of the Russian forces in areas under their control, while there are allegations of sexual abuse of women and against Ukrainian soldiers.
