War in Ukraine: UN Secretary-General meets with Ukrainian refugees in Moldova

THE Antonio Guterres during his visit to Moldova met, yesterday Tuesday (10/5), with people who escaped from him war in Ukraine and are now housed in a hospitality center refugees.

Its General Secretary United Nations called once again in statements to reporters after the visit to the camp to end the war, according to his services.

“It is impossible to meet refugees and not be shocked by their stories”, stressed Mr. Guterres. This tragedy shows how “War is irrational and this war must stop”he added, referring to the conflict that broke out when the Russian army invaded Ukrainian territory on February 24.

The Portuguese also visited the home of a Moldovan family hosting refugees and personally thanked its members for their generosity.

Earlier, the UN Secretary-General met with the President of Moldova, Maya Santouin which he expressed his appreciation for the solidarity shown by her country to the refugees from Ukraine, according to the representative of Farhan Hak.

He stressed that Moldova welcomed most Ukrainian refugees in proportion to its own population. The country of 2.5 million has welcomed some 450,000 Ukrainian refugees. According to the UN, more than five million Ukrainians have fled the country because of the war, and more than eight million have been displaced inside Ukraine.

Mr Guterres traveled to Vienna after a visit to Moldova.
