War in Ukraine: US, EU consider banning Russian oil imports

The United States and the European Union are “actively discussing” the possibility of banning Russian imports oilin response to invasion of Ukrainesaid today the head of the American diplomacy Anthony Blinken.

“We are discussing with our European partners and allies the need to coordinate the idea of banning Russian oil imports while ensuring that stocks in world markets are sufficient,” Blinken told CNN.

The government of US President Joe Biden is under political pressure to extend sanctions against Russia, especially in the energy sector. So far this sector has not been particularly affected by the measures imposed by the West, so as not to destabilize the markets. U.S. Senators, Democrats and Republicans, unveiled a bill Thursday that seeks to ban imports. Biden had previously stated that he “does not rule out anything” in this matter.

When asked today by CNN, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen appeared more cautious. He said the goal was to “make it impossible for Putin to finance his wars”, adding that the European Union “should not give up on Russian fossil fuels”. “So we are discussing in the EU a strategic approach to increase investment in renewable energy and diversify our energy supply,” he said, without referring to the ban on Russian hydrocarbons.

Asked about the purchase of Russian oil by the British giant Shell, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba replied: “Stop buying Russian oil.”

“Today, Russian oil and gas smell like Ukrainian blood,” he said, urging “all Western companies to leave Russia” for “humanitarian” reasons.
