THE American government welcomed his victory Ukrainian army, who recaptured the city of Chersona after he obliged them Russians invaders in retreat.
“Looks like the Ukrainians just won a remarkable victory: the only regional capital that Russia captured in this war is back under the Ukrainian flag, which is absolutely remarkable”said the US National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivanwho is accompanying President Joe Biden to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit being hosted in Cambodia.
Sullivan estimated that withdrawal of Moscow forces will have ‘broader strategic implications’including reducing the Russian threat to other cities in southern Ukraine, such as Odesa.
“This is a great moment and it is due to the incredible tenacity and ability of the Ukrainians, who have the united and unwavering support of the US and our allies.”he added.
Asked about reports that the Biden administration has begun pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate with Moscow, Sullivan said that Russia, not Ukraine, should decide whether to come to the negotiating table.
Russia, he noted, still has “outlandish claims” regarding the announced (by Moscow) annexations of Ukrainian territories, even as its forces are retreating due to Kiev’s counterattack.
“Ukraine is for peace in this conflict and Russia is for war. Russia invaded Ukraine. If Russia chose to cease hostilities in Ukraine and withdraw, that would be the end of this war. If Ukraine chose to stop fighting and surrender, it would be the end of Ukraine.”he said.
“In this light, our position remains unchanged and essentially (the US government) is in close consultation and on the side of President Zelensky”said National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
