The International Air Transport Association (IATA) assesses that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is unlikely to affect the long-term growth of air transport in the world.
In a report released last Tuesday (1), the entity said it was “too early to estimate what the short-term consequences for aviation will be”, but said it was “clear that there are risks”, especially in markets exposed to the conflict.
According to IATA, sensitive points include the geographic extent of the conflict, the severity and time period of sanctions and/or airspace closures. These impacts would be felt most severely in Russia, Ukraine and neighboring areas.
Before Covid-19, Russia was the 11th largest market for air transport services by number of passengers, including its domestic market. Ukraine was ranked 48th in this ranking.
It warns that the impact on airlines’ costs from fluctuations in energy prices or from rerouting flights to avoid Russian airspace could have wider implications.
Furthermore, the report notes that consumer confidence and economic activity are likely to be affected even outside Eastern Europe.
In the report, IATA says it expects the total number of travelers to reach 4 billion in 2024, surpassing pre-Covid levels.
