While earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Nord Stream 1 pipeline would be operational again, but with reduced flows, he is now hinting at whether the pipeline will be able to operate, citing the condition of the turbine.
“It remains to be seen in what condition the Nord Stream 1 equipment will return from the maintenance process,” said the Russian president.
He added that “there is a risk that the equipment will not work after it returns from Canada and Nord Stream will stop.”
Putin also argued that Canada’s decision to delay the return of the Nord Stream turbine is not a political decision and is not related to the war in Ukraine.
“There are no political issues and not even our ‘special operation in Donbass’ is responsible for this decision. The real motivations are related to Canada’s effort to enter the European market,” Putin said at the forum “Strong Ideas for a New time”.
“One piece of equipment needs repair which is scheduled. It is not granted by Canada because they have sanctions against Gazprom, even though it is a Siemens plant. I will tell you why Canada did it. Because it produces oil and natural gas itself and plans to enter the European market,” Putin noted.
Among other things, according to gazzeta.ru, Putin also stated that “Gazprom has so far not received any official document that the turbine for Nord Stream 1 will soon be returned to Russia from Canada.”
“Now they told us that we will soon receive this equipment from Canada. But so far Gazprom does not have official documents on this matter. And of course we must receive it, because it is our property, it is the property of Gazprom,” the Russian pointed out chairman. He also noted that the Russian side should receive not only the turbines, but also the related documents.
Otherwise, if Russia does not get the turbine for Nord Stream 1, the pipeline will be able to transport only 30 million cubic meters of natural gas per day, half of what it is now, Putin said.
Nord Stream 1 gas deliveries announced for Thursday
Gascade announced deliveries of natural gas through Nord Stream 1 for Thursday, German media reported, according to Reuters, as the pipeline’s scheduled maintenance period comes to an end.
The pipeline, which accounts for more than a third of Russian gas exports to the European Union, was shut down for 10 days for annual maintenance on July 11.
