War will continue until Russia decides to end it, says UN secretary-general

In his face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, United Nations (UN) Secretary General António Guterres said his message has remained the same since the beginning of the conflict: the Russian invasion is a violation of the Charter of UN and must end as soon as possible. .

Guterres, who is due to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, described his meeting with the Russian leader as “very helpful”.

The secretary-general told Anderson Cooper of CNNwho expressed his concern about violations of international law, human rights law and the “possibility of war crimes”.

Guterres also defended the role of UN to end the two-month conflict.

“The war will not end with meetings,” he said. “The war will end when the Russian Federation decides to end it and when there is – after a ceasefire – the possibility of a serious political agreement. We can have all the meetings, but that’s not what’s going to end the war.”

During the meeting with Putin, Guterres said he discussed the evacuation of civilians from the factory surrounded by Russian forces in the southern port city of Mariupol. He said Putin agreed “in principle” to the request and discussions were taking place between UN officials and Russia’s Defense Ministry to work out the details.

“We are also in contact with the government of Ukraine to see if we can have a situation where no one can blame the other side for things not happening,” he said.
