Warning from Kim Jong Un: ‘I will not hesitate to use nuclear weapons if provoked by the enemy’

The leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un announced on Wednesday (12/20) that Pyongyang would not hesitate to launch an attack with nuclear weapons. As he clarified this will happen if there is a provocation by the enemy with nuclear weapons.

The North Korean state news agency (KCNA) reported that the comment was made during an event where Kim Jong Un congratulated his military staff on the successful launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Monday.

Kim Jong Un as pointed out by the Athens News Agency citing Yonhap argued that a country’s sovereign rights are secured only through strong deterrence, and that true defensive power derives from the ability to deliver a pre-emptive strike on any enemy.

On her part, Kim Yo Jong, the North Korean leader’s sister, criticized the UN Security Council for its meeting on the ICBM launch, arguing that it was an exercise of North Korea’s right to self-defense. The UN Security Council should condemn the “irresponsible behavior” of the US and South Korea which have “escalated the tension on the Korean peninsula with all kinds of military provocations all year”, he argued.
