For the second week the conflicts between Israel and Hamas, despite increasingly intense diplomatic efforts worldwide to stem the worst escalation of violence in years.
The Israeli military announced late yesterday that Hamas and other Palestinian groups had fired about 3,350 rockets from the Gaza Strip – 200 on Monday alone – and that Israeli forces had killed at least 130 fighters.
Gaza health services say 212 Palestinians have been killed, among them 61 children. Ten people lost their lives in Israel, including two children.
At a time when diplomatic efforts to end the violence do not seem to be succeeding, US General Mark Miley warned of the possibility of the violence spreading.
“You risk wider destabilization and a series of negative consequences “If the conflict continues,” warned the chief of the US General Staff from Brussels. “It is not in anyone’s interest to continue.”
Israeli airstrikes continued overnight. Shortly after dawn, rockets hit two buildings in Gaza, filling the atmosphere with smoke.
At the same time, fighters on the Gaza Strip fired rockets, sounding sirens in Israeli cities, sending thousands of people to shelters.
So far there are no reports of injuries.
Rockets fired overnight from Gaza appear to be fewer than other nights.
Diplomatic efforts
US President Joe Biden has called for a ceasefire during a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as announced by the White House.
However, Netanyahu had earlier told the Israelis that airstrikes targeting military targets and military leaders in Gaza would continue.
“It simply came to our notice then to continue targeting terrorist targets ” mentioned in a televised message. “We will continue to do what is necessary to restore peace and security to all the people of Israel.”
Her armed arm Hamas retaliated by promising even more rockets.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called on all parties to protect the people.
While stressing that Israel has a right to defend itself, Blinken said he saw no evidence that the Hamas operated from the Associated Press building, which was hit at the weekend.
Egypt and UN mediators also intervened in the diplomatic field, while the UN General Assembly will meet on Thursday to discuss the issue.
