Washington Post: The Trump administration has leaked secret files from journalists’ phone calls

The government Trump has secretly obtained the records of telephone conversations of Washington Post journalists who wrote about the accusations of Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election, the American newspaper reported on Friday.

The US Department of Justice sent a letter to journalists Ellen Nakashima and Greg Miller, as well as to former journalist Adam Endus, informing them that he had received the records of their telephone conversations from their personal and professional landlines and from their mobile phones. for the period from April 15, 2017 to July 31, 2017 “, reports the Washington Post.

The paper expresses “its deep concern at this use of government power to gain access to journalists’ communications,” said Cameron Barr, its director.

“The Department of Justice must immediately shed light on the reasons for this intrusion into the activities of journalists, which are protected by the first amendment to the United States Constitution,” he continued.

The American Civil Rights Association (ACLU) said in a statement that the Justice Department had “spied” on these journalists “for the whims of a government”.

“This should never have happened,” ACLU wrote on Twitter. “When the government spies on journalists and their sources, the freedom of the press is endangered.”

The Ministry of Justice, for its part, claimed that it had followed “established procedures” regarding this request, the newspaper reports, citing a representative of the ministry.

According to the APE-MPE, the letters to the journalists did not specify the reason for which these records of telephone conversations had been confiscated. However, at the end of this period, these three journalists had written an article for the American intelligence services which implied that Jeff Sessions, who later became Minister of Justice under Donald Trump, had discussed the latter’s election campaign with the ambassador of Russia.

Moscow is accused of secretly supporting the candidacy of Donald Trump in 2016 in order to favor his victory.
