Washington predicts continuation of ‘strategic cooperation’ with Israel, no matter who is prime minister

The United States has said it intends to continue its “strategic cooperation” with Israel, regardless of the outcome of the political crisis that is expected to lead the country to its fifth parliamentary election in less than four years.

“Our relationship with Israel does not depend on the person who holds the prime minister’s office,” Ned Price, a US diplomat, told reporters in Washington.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced on Monday that he would vote to dissolve parliament as the Jewish state prepares to welcome US President Joe Biden in mid-July.

Asked about the possibility of a return to power of right-wing former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with whom the Democrats in the United States had sometimes strained relations, Ned Price said that US policy does not change depending on the winner of the Israeli election.

“I do not expect political developments in Israel to have consequences for what we are trying to achieve together,” said a State Department spokesman. “The strength of our strategic cooperation does not depend on the personality of the leaders of the two countries,” he stressed.
