The United States announced today a new humanitarian aid of $53 million for the Palestinianswith a senior US official calling for the protection of aid workers in the war-torn Gaza Strip.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) said aid would be channeled through the World Food Program and NGOs, as the Israel and Western powers withdraw from the service of the UN for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Announcing the aid in a video streamed from Jordan, USAID chief Samantha Power said this new aid “it must reach the people in need».
“The humanitarian workers in Gaza risking their lives to get food to people who desperately need it, it must be protected,” he said.
“They need to know they can do their job without getting shot and killed“, he added, without naming Israel or Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip.
This assistance brings to $180 million the total amount of emergency aid they provided the United States to the Palestinians after the October 7 attack by Hamas against Israel, which responded with a merciless military campaign in Gaza.
According to the UN, 2.2 million people, the vast majority of the populationare threatened with starvation in the Israeli-besieged Gaza Strip.
UNRWA employs approximately 30,000 people in the occupied Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. However, service whose funding from the United States and other countries has been suspendedhas been at the center of controversy since Israel accused 12 of its employees of involvement in the October 7 attack.
