US authorities today announced for the first time nationally a cap on the level of synthetic PFAS chemicals that can be present in drinking tap water, as concern grows about the risks these substances pose to human health. The new regulation will reduce the exposure to PFASs, known as “permanent chemicals,” for about 100 million people and prevent “thousands of deaths,” according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It is the “strongest action EPA has ever taken” on “permanent chemicals,” said agency chief Michael Regan.
