Washington suspends 2013 trade deal with Myanmar

The US government today announced new sanctions against it Myanmar, after the violent suppression of the demonstrations, at the weekend, in this country, reports APE.

The representative of USA for Trade (USTR), Kathryn Thai, said that a trade agreement reached between the two countries was suspended with immediate effect, until a “democratically elected” government takes power in Myanmar again. This is the 2013 Framework Agreement on Trade and Investment.

The killing of peaceful protesters, students, workers, trade unionists and children “shocked the conscience of the international community,” Tai said. “These actions are a direct attack on the country’s transition to democracy and the efforts of the people of Myanmar for a peaceful and prosperous future,” he added.

More than 100 people, including many children, were killed in Myanmar over the weekend in the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protests that have been going on for two months since the February 1 military coup.
