More than 66 thousand tons of garbage were removed from the Pinheiros River last year in São Paulo. The numbers are impressive, but they do not address the problem that has worsened with recent dry periods.
A digital panel, called Lixometer, is monitoring the amount of garbage removed from the Pinheiros River, one of the main tributaries of the Tietê River, in São Paulo.
Since September 2023, the Lixometer has recorded a significant volume of waste collected. The panel is installed on the banks of the Pinheiros River, close to Casa Conectada, in Parque Bruno Covas.
Garbage collection is carried out by a boat that travels the 25 kilometers of the river, removing various types of debris, from PET bottles and Styrofoam to larger objects such as sofas and mattresses.
The action is part of the IntegraTietê Program, an initiative by the São Paulo government to recover the Pinheiros River and its tributaries, combating pollution caused by irregular waste disposal.
More than R$119 million invested in cleaning
According to data from the Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of the State of São Paulo (Semil), more than R$119 million has already been spent to remove more than 66 thousand tons of floating waste.
The pollution of the Pinheiros River is the result of human action, with the irregular disposal of garbage on the streets and the lack of basic sanitation in some regions. The rains wash this waste into the river, contaminating the water and damaging the environment.
Pollution of the Pinheiros River affects water quality, biodiversity and the health of the population. Furthermore, it causes bad odors and harms the urban landscape.
São Paulo records accumulations of algae in the Pinheiros River
The government of São Paulo began, at the end of September, a pumping operation to increase circulation in the Pinheiros River. Last month, two greening events were recorded in the waters, due to the accumulation of algae.
A video recorded by a person who works on Rua Virgínia, parallel to the Pinheiros River, recorded in a video what the situation was like on September 29th. Watch the video.
