Watch out for “vishing”, citizens scammed on the phone are increasing

Your bank number appears on the display. Who answers he pretends to be operator of the institute, reports alleged “anomalies” in the management of the credit card or current account and asks to activate the “security procedures”. The scam that is spreading more and more in Italy (in the United States has already been raging for several years) is called “vishing” and it is a real “voice phishing».

The postal police, who warn that complaints from scammed citizens are on the rise, explains how this type of scam works: “The scammers make the victim read aloud the” confirmation code “which authorizes a transaction via the web for online purchases .

In fact, criminals, who have previously come into possession of credit card data (card number, expiration date and CVV), need to read aloud this “code” which is sent to the phone; the conversation is recorded e the reading actually authorizes a real transaction with subtraction of money from the victim ». The scammed person, believing that he has acted correctly to secure his account or payment card, only realizes later that there are, in reality, unauthorized outgoing movements on his account.

The Postal Police stresses once again that – even if, on the emotional wave, it may be easier to get sensitive information extorted – it is important never disclose sensitive data to anyone, either by phone, social network or email, passwords, pins or access codes.

“It is advisable to always be wary of those who ask us for such data, presenting themselves as operators of public institutions, important companies or banking institutions”, adds the police. «It would be useful instead to proceed to simple checks, by contacting the entity involved who will be able to confirm our suspicions ». Just try to call back immediately after the company that the telephone operator claims to belong to using the number indicated on the official website. When you are sure you have been contacted by scammers, do it right away report to the Police.

Recognizing vishing and knowing how to defend oneself is also important because, more and more often, in these cases, the bank refuses to compensate the cheated. And the judges agree with the credit institutions, which cannot take responsibility for what happens to those who, on the phone, report the keys to their accounts.
