Without rain for more than three months, the waters of the Bom Despacho waterfall, in Santa Cruz de Minas, a municipality located approximately 185 kilometers from the capital Belo Horizonte (MG), have completely dried up.
According to the city hall, it is the first time this has happened at the tourist spot . In other dry periods there was a significant reduction in the waterfall’s water levels, but nothing like what is happening now.
Augusto César, spokesperson for the City Hall of Santa Cruz de Minas, told CNN that the water levels of the waterfall have worsened in the last 15 days, when some of the wells that make up the falls at the tourist spot dried up.
Reduction in tourism
According to César, the municipality experiences frequent periods of drought. He emphasized that the water supply to the population is not provided by the aquifer that makes up the waterfall, but that the drought results in damage to the ecosystem and also to tourism in the region.
“We already feel the reduction of approximately 80% of visitors to the site ”, highlighted the spokesperson.
As it is the smallest municipality in Brazil in terms of territory, Santa Cruz de Minas stands out for its tourist attraction, the Bom Despacho waterfall, located between São João Del Rei and Tiradentes (MG), close to Marco Zero of Estrada Real.
