Wave of robberies targets cell phones and exposes security concerns in urban areas

The city of São Paulo had a cell phone theft every five minutes in the first two months of 2022, according to data gathered by the Brazilian Public Security Forum, based on official statistics. The number is close to that recorded in 2019, before the period of restrictions on the movement of people on the streets imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Investigations show that cell phones have definitely entered the sights of specialized gangs, who are interested in both the devices and their parts as well as the data that can be used in fraud and extortion. Recent cases, such as the death of 20-year-old Renan Silva Loureiro, victim of a robbery in São Paulo, raise concern about the need for action to combat these crimes.

In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira takes stock of concerns about the recent wave of cell phone robberies and thefts in large urban centers in Brazil. In order to describe the challenges of the current scenario of public security in cities across the country, delegate Jorge Atum Sobrinho, from the Department of Judiciary Police of the Capital (Decap) of São Paulo, and researcher David Marques, project coordinator of the Brazilian Forum of Public Security.
