We are charting our coordinated response – von der Leyen

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Wednesday that Gazprom’s announcement is another attempt by Russia to blackmail us with gas.

Additional comments

“We’re ready for this scenario”.

“We’re plotting our coordinated response of the EU”.

“Europeans can trust that we stand united and in solidarity with the affected Member States.”

Meanwhile, the speaker of the Russian parliament said that gas buyers will face cuts if they don’t pay in rubles.

On the suspension of Russian gas supplies to Bulgaria and Poland, he said: “Moscow should do the same with regard to other hostile countries”.

Previously, Gazprom has stopped gas flows to Poland and Bulgaria and has decided to keep the supply cut off until the two countries agree to Moscow’s demand to pay for the fuel in rubles.

Bloomberg now reports that four European gas buyers appear to have already paid for supplies in rubles, giving in to Russian blackmail.
