“We are confident that buildings where Brazilians are located will not be bombed”, says Brazilian ambassador to Palestine

Ambassador Alessandro Candeas, Brazil’s representative to Palestine, said he was confident that buildings and houses housing Brazilians in the southern region of the Gaza Strip would not be targets of attacks.

According to Candeas, Brazil has informed the Israeli government about the location of the temporary residence and the possible movements of Brazilians. Communication to the Israeli authorities is made with the support of the Brazilian Embassy in Tel Aviv.

“Every movement and temporary residence of Brazilians is reported to the Israeli government so that they do not run the risk of being bombed. Obviously and unfortunately there is bombing in nearby regions, in nearby neighborhoods, but we are sure that the buildings and houses where Brazilians are staying will not be bombed”, said the ambassador.

Bombings have increased in the region, where around 30 Brazilians are awaiting the opening of the border with Egypt to be repatriated. They are in the cities of Rafah and Khan Yunis. A Brazilian Air Force plane awaits the group in Cairo, the Egyptian capital.

Brazilian Hasan Rabee, who is in Khan Yunis, said this Monday (23) that he is living through the most difficult time since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

“It’s a terrible time. Last night there was a lot of bombing. We were praying together. Me, my wife, my family stayed in the room to try to protect as much as possible. We couldn’t sleep for a second, the children were crying, bombs were falling everywhere. A very terrible night, we didn’t even imagine we were going to get out of that night”, said Rabee.

Protection for Brazilians in Gaza

Assistance to Brazilians in Gaza is provided by the Palestine Representation team, which is divided into two teams. One – made up of Brazilian diplomats – is in Jerusalem taking care of strategy and security. The other — made up of Brazilian-Palestinians and Palestinians — is in Ramallah, in the West Bank, responsible for operational, administrative and consular arrangements.

The work is divided into three parts: saving Brazilians from the combat zone; relieve and protect Brazilians from the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and carry out repatriation through the opening of the Rafah crossing.

The Brazilian Representation in Palestine maintains contact with Brazilians in Gaza through a WhatsApp group. The Brazilian government has been sending money so that the group can buy food, water and medicine.
