UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on Wednesday that he feels a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine is far from over.
“We are far from the end of the war,” he told reporters after a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“There is no ceasefire in sight,” he said, adding, “I would be lying if I said that would happen.”
The diplomat said he discussed various issues with Putin, including the grain deal and the possibility of Russian exports, but warned that there are obstacles to the export of Russian food and fertilizers.
“We risk the lack of food in the world at the end of this year”, he said.
The two also discussed prisoners of war, and Guterres quoted Putin as saying there would be no obstacles from Russia regarding the panel conducting a fact-finding mission into last month’s prison attack in a Russian-occupied region of eastern Ukraine. Dozens were killed.
Guterres said he also talked to Putin about Ukraine’s nuclear plant.
