Education Day has been celebrated on April 28 since 2000, when the World Education Forum in Dakar established a commitment to expand access to basic education in the world.
The framework serves to encourage and make the population aware of the importance of education, whether school, social or family, in addition to the construction of essential values in life in society.
In an interview with CNN Radio on CNN Educationthe vice president of the Ayrton Senna Institute, Roberto Campos de Lima, stated that we are still “relatively far from the goals established” 22 years ago.
Among them, he highlights the need for improvements in the level of literacy. “They are still a challenge, we live in moments when we work on access to education and its universalization.”
Unfortunately, according to the specialist, Brazilian education was already dealing with the challenge of quality. “Out of 10 children enrolled in basic education, a small portion completed their studies with a full understanding of Portuguese, only 3 of them, and only 1 with basic knowledge of mathematics.”
The period of closed schools due to the pandemic, according to Roberto Campos de Lima, “aggravated the situation, especially for the poorest.”
“The potential for setback is in the order of ten years and we were already in a situation below that of neighboring countries in Latin America, for example”, he added.
For the vice president of the Institute, “the scenario requires immediate actions from the public manager, civil society, governments in general and educators so that the delay does not take 10 years to be reversed.”
