“We are finally being recognized”, says Bolsonaro about joining the OECD

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) used his official Facebook account to comment on the approval of Brazil’s entry into the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The endorsement was confirmed during a ministerial meeting, according to a statement released this Friday (10) after the meeting. According to Bolsonaro, with the country’s entry into the body “it leaves behind alliances with socialist dictatorships”.

“The OECD, which brings together countries committed to democracy and the best government practices, today approved [10] the plan for our entry into the entity. It is Brazil leaving behind alliances with socialist dictatorships and consolidating beneficial partnerships for our nation. We worked hard to make it possible for us to join the entity, we gathered support from all member countries and we are finally being recognized. This advance, which has grown in my government, demonstrates once again the discrepancy between the narratives of part of the press and the reality”, said Bolsonaro in the publication, where a photograph of the president with the secretary general of the OECD, Mathias Cormann, was published.

In addition to Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Peru and Romania also advanced in their bid to join the entity.

One of the notable absences from the list is Argentina, although official discussions for the accession of Buenos Aires began at the same time as those of Brasilia, in January.

Subject with Biden

In his meeting at the Summit of the Americas with US President Joe Biden, Bolsonaro discussed Brazil’s entry into the OECD.

In an interview with CNN after the meeting, Bolsonaro said he was “amazed by Biden”. “It was exceptional, I’m very happy. (…) I am not wrong to speak in this way. We spent almost half an hour talking privately,” said the Brazilian president.

The government officials pledged to maintain their commercial collaboration, “including through US support for Brazil’s candidacy for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the US government said.
